Its limits apply in addition to those provided by underlying coverage, thereby providing an overall higher limit of coverage. It is used in one of two ways:
- To provide additional limits of protection over the coverage listed in your underlying schedule
- To provide primary coverage for some risks, subject to retention, when your underlying coverage does not apply
